book: affinity

Holy shit, you guys. You know when you're reading a book and something so unexpected happens it's kind of like someone just punched you in the side of the head? I just finished the book Affinity by Sarah Waters, and that's really the only way to describe the ~experience. REELING. :O But, you know, in a good way.

Really good book, man. I won't say more, I don't want to ~spoil anyone. That said -- omg, I don't even know what to do with myself now that I'm finished, asdfkl;ajsdlkfjf.

This is the second book of hers I've read -- Fingersmith was the first. I think, if I were to compare the two, I like Fingersmith better, but they were both amazingly plotted.

This isn't much of a review at all, but seriously, consider picking up one of her books sometimes (I'd go for Fingersmith~). Well-written, well-plotted historical novels with lesbian main characters. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE? :D

Ooh, sounds very intriguing!! I just did a little search on my library's online catalog and they have both of those books! My spring break is coming up around the corner, I'll have to check one of them out, then. :)

\o/ Haha, awesome. Also, I just gave a brief description of Affinity in the comment below yours, if you want the summary I completely failed to give in the entry itself. >_>

I've only read Tipping the Velvet of hers, but I remember enjoying it. Tell me the vague plotline for Affinity?

Well, there are two main characters -- Selina is a ~spiritualist inmate in a woman's prison, Margaret is the unhappy spinster and "Lady Visitor." Set in Victorian times. It's written mostly as excerpts from Margaret's diary, interspersed by brief excerpts from Selina's diary. It's kind of cool because it's got the whole 'unreliable narrator' thing going on, if you enjoy that sort of story.
