habitat for humanity

Yesterday I went to a Habitat for Humanity build! I dug trenches and put in electrical pipe. I got to use a jackhammer. It was awesome. :D

I am now sore everywhere. EVERYWHERE. The palms of my hands hurt, my shoulders hurt, my back hurts, my wrists hurts. It's a nice kind of sore tho -- the soreness of a job well done~ I'm just going to sit in bed all day, lol.

But something happened during the build that bothered me. It was like a tiny comment, really, but you know.

Me and the woman I was working with were supposed to show three boys (about our age) how to put in the pipe. The overseer goes to the guys and says, "Well, you're going to have to learn to listen to women sometime!"

Three dudes: LOLOLOLOLOLOL OMG HAHAHAHAHA

(I swear, they laughed for entire minutes. It wasn't that funny, assholes.)

Me and her: ...?

UGH, why do people think these jokes are funny? Women still get paid 75 cents to each man's dollar. Fucking John Boehner is trying to redefine rape as "coercive" rape, as if rape isn't inherently fucking coercive. Women have always been shit upon by society and the world in general, but oh ho! It's so funny to joke about ~listening~ to women because we're inferior and women can't be ~leaders~.

Later the dudes asked us to help them finish their pipe. Both of us were like 'HAH fuck you. No." Satisfying. :3

Sometimes I feel like the world goes one step further, two steps back. The other day on FB I made a status about how I didn't want to do my homework, etc., and my friend's husband suggested I just make my professors sandwiches instead, especially if they are guys. And I don't even think he realized how offensive that was. I didn't throw a fit or anything, I just said I wasn't making anybody a goddamn sandwich, they can make it themselves. It's like the whole thing just went completely over his head. It's not cool to make jokes like that when they're not called for. It's frustrating.

Holy shit, I almost can't believe he said that.

Yeah, it's so frustrating because it's everywhere. Guys seem nice and then BAM, sexism. There's just... nowhere to escape.

These days I absolutely hate being in male-dominated spaces. I feel really uncomfortable because it's almost inevitable someone will make a "funny" joke that's totally alienating. Or if I'm not good at something, there's a big chance it will be attributed to my gender. fuck the world, seriously.

And by male-dominated spaces, I mean... everywhere, because men are everywhere & dominate most places. Like herpes.

HA. Men are a sexually transmitted disease. YOU CAN'T ESCAPE.
